Making the whole family smile
We pride ourselves on being a practice for all the family. Whether this be advising on fantastic oral health for Children or providing dental implants or dentures for a grandparent.
We aim to build relationships with our patients so that they can have beautiful smiles at all stages of their lives.
Our hygienists are highly motivated and committed to the education of patient’s dental awareness, providing preventive treatment from simple scale and polishing, air-polishing to individual oral health care programs.
It is our aim to prevent dental disease rather than treat it at a later date. Fluoride applications and fissure sealants are applied to biting surfaces of children’s teeth to prevent decay. We will advise parents on the best ways to look after children’s teeth and address any concerns they may have.

Are you scared of the dentist?
A fear of the dentist is a common occurrence; many people suffer from dental anxiety and often put off visiting a dentist for this very reason. If you are one of the many people who are scared of the dentist then there are many ways to try to ease your anxiety.
There are many reasons why you many have a fear of the dentist. It could simply be the thought of treatment, or it could be related to a negative experience you have had in the past. The good news is that more and more dentists understand their patients’ fears. Simply choosing a good dentist can ease the anxiety many patients feel.
An understanding, patient and kind dental team can reassure you that treatment need not be a traumatic experience. Technological advances have improved dentistry over the past few years. The dental wand is great for anyone with a needle phobia. A numbing gel can also be used to numb your gums before an injection, which means that you will not feel the needle.
Tips to ease your fear of the dentist
– Find an understanding dentist. Here at Shifnal Dental Care we pride ourselves on being sympathetic to patients who suffer with dental anxiety and will work with you to ease your fears
– Meet the team before any treatment. Visiting the surgery to have a look around and meeting team can often put your mind at rest that it is not such a scary place after all.
– Don’t Worry. The first appointment will simply be an oral health assessment, so please don’t worry. You will not be launched into having a filling, the drill or a needle. Ask any questions you have and let them know that you are scared of the dentist, this way they will be aware of your anxiety.
If you have a fear of the dentist then come and see our friendly treatment co-ordinator Katherine. She is an extremely knowledgeable and friendly team member and can talk you through all the options available. While having a coffee and a chat she will show you results that we have achieved for patients in a similar situation to yourself. Call 01952 460119 to book your appointment today.
Emergency dentists to the rescue
Anybody who has ever had a toothache will testify that it’s one of the worst pains imaginable. We all know that dental pain can seem to come out of the blue. Suddenly you are in agony and if you are not registered with a dentist you can feel like you have nowhere to turn. That’s where emergency dentists come to the rescue.
Here at Shifnal Dental Care we understand that there is a need for emergency dentistry. So if you urgently need a tooth out, a filling or just want us to alleviate the pain then we can help you.
We can provide half and hour emergency appointments for just £100. We will find the problem and fix it quickly.
We do of course always promote regular oral health assessments and hygiene appointments to our patients as a preventative. But if you would prefer just to see us in emergency situations then we are here for you to.
Don’t forget we do offer monthly dental memberships which spread the cost of dental treatment should you wish to become a patient.

Tips for whiter teeth this summer
It’s that time of year again when the sun beckons and we all start to feel a little happier. This means our pearly whites will be on show more than ever. Whilst thinking of pulling out your summer wardrobe, why not take a few minutes to think about how you’ll keep your smile looking great too.
The usual daily hygiene routine of brushing your teeth is of course a must for keeping a healthy white smile. Sugar-free chewing gum can also be a real saver at summer events. Research shows that chewing sugar-free gum after eating or drinking can help to remove harmful acids in the mouth, while the increased saliva flow also helps to wash away food particles.
There are some drinks that are best to give a miss this summer. These include red wine and dark juices, which have the potential to darken the colour of your smile. Just remember: If the food or drink you’re about to put in your mouth is dark, it most likely has the potential to stain your teeth.
If you want to make sure that your teeth look their best this summer you could consider getting professional teeth whitening for a brighter smile.
There are home whitening or zoom whitening treatments to choose from, both of which have the potential to markedly improve the brightness of your smile. It is a quick, easy treatment that will instantly improve the appearance of your smile in preparation for the summer sunshine.
If you would like to learn more about how to whiten your teeth, whether it’s for a special event or just for every day, Shifnal Dental Care can help. Get in touch with us today for more information on teeth whitening.

The job of a Dental Hygienist
The job of a Dental Hygienist is a rewarding one. People think it involves a ‘scrape and polish’ but that is a small amount as to what the my job actually entails.
I regularly give oral hygiene and toothbrushing instruction…it’s amazing how different peoples’ perception of what a good toothbrushing routine should consist of! some people brush once , twice a day, after every meal…I once had a patient who said he didn’t brush very often at all and had only used a couple of tubes of toothpaste in his whole life! The significance of this is plaque deposits are left on a persons’ teeth ,they go hard or mineralise into a hard deposit called calculus, this irritates the gum and causes inflammation which in turn speeds up recession (the going long in the tooth process) which is generally considered inevitable as we get older, can be prevented with excellent hygiene!
What can be done if we are already ‘long in the tooth?’…. It’s never too late to make a difference, you may need some deeper scaling to remove those irritating deposits of calculus..Improved toothbrushing and regular interdental cleaning mean the life of the teeth can be dramatically extended.
