Diastemas – Our Smile of the Month!
Quite Often we see people who are generally happy with their smile but are concerned about a small feature of their teeth.
One of these features is a gap between incisors known as Diastema.
Diastema is fairly common and has given some celebrities a distinctive look which has helped their careers. Famous examples would be Terry Thomas the British comedian (left) who had a Diastema which measured 1/3 of an inch.
During one period of his career, Thomas styled himself as ‘Terry-Thomas’, using a hyphen between his first and second name, in part to mimic the gap between his teeth!
More recently, models, such as Georgia May Jagger (right), and singer Vanessa Paradis have built a career partly on their noteworthy smile.
Read this article at Fashion Gone Rogue which celebrates what has become known as ‘gap tooth chic’.
In spite of the fashionable look, many people feel they would benefit from losing the gap. There are a few ways to close the space, such as orthodontic treatment or crowns or veneers.
In both of our case studies, we decided to close the gap with composite filling material. We opted for this procedure as a quick and inexpensive option which does not lead to tissue damage. Importantly, it doesn’t require drilling in the tooth or injection.
