Why Are Dental Health Check-Ups So Important?

We all know that we should be going to the dentist regularly, but it can often be pushed to the back of our minds, and as a general rule, people don’t tend to like going to the dentist.

It is so important to have regular dental check-ups for many reasons, and at Shifnal Dental Care, we strive to ensure that you have a stress-free experience.

Below are several important reasons to get regular dental check-ups:

  • Mouth Cancer detection

We don’t want to scare you into not making an appointment, but Oral cancer can manifest itself in many ways and every dental check-up includes a screening for this. Early detection can dramatically increase chances of survival.

  • Gum Disease detection

Most cases of gum disease can be treated by maintaining a good level of oral hygiene, this includes brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly. By going to dental check-ups regularly, any problems can be detected and treated early.

  • Keep bad habits in check

Smoking in particular is one of the most destructive habits for your mouth as it can cause bad breath, discolouration as well as other medical conditions.  Other bad habits that may lead to dental problems include: Chewing Ice, clenching your jaw, grinding teeth, brushing too hard and drinking coffee & red wine.

  • Detect issues with X-rays

X-rays help to detect issues that can’t be seen by eye! Not all dental problems involve toothache, sometimes problems can go undetected and the damage can be much more extensive by the time they become painful. Our Membership and Membership Plus packages include all X-rays free of charge.

Top two dental issues left unchecked:

Many of us will ignore health problems when they are related to our teeth and gums, as we don’t think it’s a problem that needs to be dealt with straight away. We allow problems to grow before we make that trip to the dentist. Below are the top two issues that we allow to go unchecked.

  • Allowing gums to bleed

When we allow our gums to bleed, this helps to create cavities and inflamed gums and pockets develop under the gum line. These are filled with bacteria that can eat away at the bone and could eventually cause tooth loss.

  • Tooth pain

Tooth pain is most often caused by cavities forming. By the time cavities have reached the stage where they are causing pain, root canal treatment is more likely needed or you face the possibility of an extensive filling. By having regular check-ups, the beginnings of a filling can be identified.

Adults and children should visit the dentist regularly, the recommended time period is every 6 months, however, you may need to see the dentist more often if you suffer with other medical conditions.

At Shifnal Dental Care, we offer memberships that entitle our patients to 2 examinations, 2 hygienist appointments and 2 Air Polishes per year, all for £7.21 per month for 18-25-year olds and £14.73 per month for a general membership, as well as the opportunity for membership plus for £25 per month. Take a look at our membership page for more information.

Regular dental check-ups heavily decrease the potential for oral health problems becoming more serious.
