Teeth Whitening: Is it for you?

At Shifnal Dental Care, we offer teeth whitening services because we know how important your smile is to you. Teeth whitening involves bleaching your teeth to make them lighter, we want to help you feel good and improve the way you feel about your teeth.

Teeth whitening should only be performed by a dentist or regulated dental professional. At Shifnal Dental Care, we have multiple methods available to brighten your smile. Your teeth can be lightened using ‘Zoom!’ within our practice or we have a home whitening kit available for your convenience. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening; however, this is illegal if there is no dental professional present, and you may end up putting your health at risk.

Our teeth become stained by the food and drink that we consume. Smoking also further damages our teeth as the natural shade of our teeth darken. Surface stains and internal discolouration can be caused by age, drinking coffee, tea or red wine. Plaque and tartar and trauma to the teeth that cause a brown, grey or black in colour.

You may want to have your teeth whitened in order to boost your confidence and self-esteem, to achieve a younger appearance, to make a positive first impression or reverse previous years of yellowing and staining.

Teeth whitening is for you if you have permanent teeth and good oral health. If you have discolouration caused by underlying issues such as decay, abscesses or root canal problems, you should treat these issues before proceeding with teeth whitening.  If you don’t have underlying problems or other issues such as tender gums or a receding gum line, then you are unlikely to be sensitive to the chemicals in bleaching treatments.

Will would be more than happy to speak with you and advise whether teeth whitening is right for you. We will be happy to answer any questions that you may have, ask us about the results you expect and the benefits and risks of the treatment.

We can assess your oral health and recommend the method that we think is best for you. Bleaching is not recommended if you have tooth-coloured fillings, crowns or caps. Bleach won’t change these colours and therefore they will stand out amongst the whitened smile. Other options other than teeth whitening are available, just ask us!

If you are interested in having your teeth whitened at Shifnal Dental Care, please give us a call on 01952 460119 and speak to Katherine, our treatment co-ordinator.
