The Christmas countdown is on and unfortunately, it’s not just our waistlines that suffer with overindulgence, but our teeth too. Sugary food, alcoholic drinks and late nights all play havoc with our oral health. Luckily, there are a few simple tips that can help keep any damage at bay.
- Stick to a routine
With all the late nights and family visits, it can be difficult to maintain your normal dental routine over Christmas. However, it is important to stick to your routine as much as possible. Remember to be disciplined and brush your teeth twice a day and don’t forget to floss!
- Try to limit your prosecco intake
If you love a glass of bubbly at Christmas, be mindful of how many glasses of prosecco you drink. Sparkling wines like prosecco can cause damage to your teeth with a condition known as ‘prosecco teeth’ where the teeth come away from the gum.
The good news is there are ways you can limit the affects prosecco have on your teeth. Try drinking sparkling wine through a straw, drink with food to reduce the acidity, take breaks and don’t brush your teeth for at least an hour after drinking.
- Stop snacking
As there is so much nice food on offer at Christmas, it is easy for your meals to merge into a day long event. However, it is important to keep snacking to a minimum to allow your teeth to recover between meals.
- Chew sugar free gum
Chewing sugar free gum helps to protect your teeth and gums between meals where brushing is not possible. When you eat, acid is produced leaving your teeth at ricks of plaque building up. Chewing sugar free gum will reduce this risk as it helps the mouth to produce more saliva – the mouth’s natural defence against acid.
- Bring out the cheese board!
Believe it or not, cheese is good for your teeth! Cheese helps to reduce the acid levels in your mouth after eating, helping to protect your teeth. So, don’t turn down the cheeseboard at Christmas dinner!
