We’ve all seen toothpaste adverts on TV and heard from our dentist about the dangers of gum disease, but what actually is it? And how can we spot it, treat it and prevent it in the first place? We’ve put together a list of the common ways to spot gum disease as well as how we can prevent or treat it.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of a sticky substance called plaque. Plaque contains bacteria, some of which is harmless but some can be harmful to the health of your gums.
Plaque is normally removed when brushing your teeth but, if missed, can begin to build up and irritate your gums.
What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
Most adults have gum disease to some extent and most people will experience it at least once, so it’s important to be able to spot the signs.
Initial Symptoms
Initial symptoms include bleeding gums after brushing or flossing and red, swollen gums. This is the early stage of gum disease and is commonly known as gingivitis.
Further Symptoms
If the initial symptoms are left untreated, more serious issues can begin to develop. The tissue and bone supporting the teeth can be affected. Know as periodontitis or periodontal disease, its symptoms can include:
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Bad breath
- Tooth loss
- Puss collections developing under the gums, known as an abscess/
How to Treat Gingivitis
The best way to treat gum disease is to prevent it in the first place. If the signs of gum disease have already developed the best course of action is to visit your dentist.
Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is the first step you should take to keep your mouth clean, healthy and disease-free. To keep on top of your oral hygiene you should:
- Floss your teeth daily
- Brush twice a day for at least 2 minutes.
- Use a good fluoride toothpaste.
- Get regular dental checkups.
- Antiseptic mouthwash.
Dental Treatments for Gum Disease
If gum disease is allowed to develop, more serious treatment may be needed and you may need to visit your dentist who can decide on the best treatment.

Root planing is a deep clean under the gums that removes bacteria and other debris from the roots of your teeth,
Tooth Scale and Polish
If plaque is allowed to build up, it can become hard which may require a scale and polish to remove. This deep clean involves the hygienist scraping away the build-up with dental tools and then polishing to remove any stains or marks.
