A Guide To Invisalign Aftercare

Invisalign has become an extremely popular method of straightening teeth, as unlike metal braces they are almost invisible and they can straighten teeth as little as 9 to 15 months. But, like metal braces, there are still steps you need to continue to take after your orthodontic treatment:

Wear Retainers

By wearing your retainers you are preventing your teeth from moving back to their original position, and neglecting to wear them will affect the way your smile looks. Not only that, but it could affect your overall oral health.

Brush and Floss

Once you no longer need to wear the aligners all day it is best to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once, much like you did when you had to wear the aligners. Keeping this routine is great for your oral hygiene, and unlike with metal braces where you have to alter your oral hygiene routine, you will already be used to your aftercare routine.

An added bonus is that straight teeth are easier to keep clean!

Go For Regular Checkups & Cleanings

Regular dental checkups and cleanings both during and after your orthodontic treatment are important as any hard plaque needs to be removed and your oral health needs to be checked. With regular checkups, your dentist can assess your teeth and gums to ensure you have a healthy smile, and with an exam and x-rays can catch any issues early. Making treatment much simpler and more affordable.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet full of the necessary vitamins and minerals, fruits and veggies, lean protein, low-fat dairy, complex carbohydrates and good fats can go a long way in boosting your oral health. Prevent the formation of cavities by enjoying sweets and sugary drinks in moderation.

Wear a Mouthguard When Playing Sport

Protect your lovely straight teeth with a mouthguard to prevent dental traumas when playing sports such as; hockey, rugby or football. After finishing Invisalign treatment, losing a tooth due to an elbow to the face or a nasty spill would be extremely annoying.

Hopefully, these steps will give you a small guide as to what happens after the last Invisalign tray, so that you can keep your newly straight smile looking its best.
