Facial Rejuvenation Treatment
As part of a natural ageing process, we develop crease lines most commonly on the upper part of the face and around the eyes which can contribute to an aged appearance.
Initially, these creases can only be seen during facial expression with frowning, laughing and smiling and are referred to as dynamic lines. However, over time these dynamic lines become etched into the skin resulting in permanent static lines. Using anti-wrinkle injections, we can reduce these lines.
What are anti-wrinkle injections and how do they work?
Anti-wrinkle injections are a form of botulinum toxin, a protein that has been used for medical purposes for more than 50 years. It works by blocking the release of chemicals that tell the muscles to move therefore reducing the activity in that muscle. This prevents new creases forming and reduces the appearance of existing ones.
Sites most commonly used with anti-wrinkle injections include the vertical lines between the eyes known as the frown lines, the lines around the eyes known as the crow’s feet and the horizontal forehead lines. It is a simple safe procedure lasting around 20 minutes after the initial consultation.
The effects take 3-14 days to fully develop and last around 3-4 months, so follow up treatment is recommended.
Dermal Fillers
The difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers is that the former relaxes the muscles whereas the filler plumps up the creases to make the skin look smoother and more youthful. The body naturally consists of a hyaluronic acid but as we age this is lost causing the appearance of creases and folds. Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into the skin.
The effects can be usually seen immediately and last between 6 to 12 months, so follow up treatment is recommended. The areas that we treat with dermal fillers include the nasolabial lines which are the folds that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth and the marionette lines which are folds that run from the corner of the mouth downwards.
The benefit of having such treatment carried out by a dentist or therapist is that they have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the facial anatomy.
